Blue, blue, blue….not a feeling, but the hues of one of the most beautiful (but sadly, possibly extinct) bird species, the Ultramarine Lorikeet. This bird is endemic to the Marquesas Islands whose artists were described by Gauguin as possessing “an unheard of sense of decoration.” The complexity of their decorative body art is illustrated by the gentleman featured on the scarf, and the border of the scarf is a typical local tattoo motif.
